Applications for the 2022 Echidna Global Scholars Program are now open and interested applicants can now apply for free using the basic guidelines given in this article. The Echidna Global scholars program aims to strengthen the capacity of local leaders to drive evidence-based change in girls’ education in low and middle-income countries around the world.
2022 Echidna Global Scholars Program
The Echidna Global Scholars Program is a visiting fellowship hosted by the Center for Universal Education (CUE) at the Brookings Institution. The program aims to build the research and analytical skills of NGO leaders and academics who have substantial experience and ties to developing countries.
Echidna Scholars spend four to six months at Brookings pursuing research on global education issues, with a specific focus on improving learning opportunities and outcomes for girls in the developing world. Upon completion of their fellowship, CUE supports the scholars in implementing an action plan that applies their new skills and expertise in the developing country where they have demonstrated substantial ties.
Applicants selected for the fellowship will receive a stipend totaling $22,500 USD to support living costs during the pre-residency and residency periods (subject to U.S tax withholding and reporting)
in addition, the center for universal education (CUE) will cover the costs associated with the via process, single occupancy housing for the three and a half month residency period, round-trip travel expenses, and a limited health insurance plan
Open to leaders in girls’ education from low and middle-income countries throughout the global south
Applicants should have a background in education, development, public policy, economic, or a related area, with a minimum of 10years of professional experience in research/academia, non-governmental, community, or civil society organizations, or government
A master’s degree is required
Candidates with experience in both academic or government settings and community organizations are especially encouraged to apply
The program selects professionals with substantial experience in and ties to low and middle-income countries (LMICs), a clear intent to return to an LMIC after completing the period of residency at Brookings, and a passion and demonstrated commitment to improving learning opportunities and life outcomes for girls and young women in and through education

Initial application materials must include;
- A cover letter that explains your goals and intent for the program, along with your CV or resume which should include your education and professional experience as well as a list of your publicastions, and any fellowships, honors, awards, funded research, or foundation support that you have received.
- The completed Echidna Global Scholars Program Application.
Documents must be saved with a format of Last Name_First Name_doucment name (for example; Doe_Jane_CV).
Note that letters of recommendation, writing samples, and transcripts are not required.
